Recently I’ve been taking extra care to develop a nightly routine that works for me, helps me unwind, and sets me up for being my best self in the morning. Since I work full time and want to spend my hours between 5-9 laying on the couch or at a relaxing happy hour, it can be hard to kick myself in the butt to actually do everything I need get done. Over the past few months I’ve solidified a nightly routine that allows me to do pretty much everything I gotta do (except maybe fold laundry – I hate doing that) in a timely and efficient manner.
I start between 9 and 10 pm, by making lunch for the following day. Sometimes this just means packaging up the leftovers from dinner, other times this means starting anew. Usually this takes me anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, and then it’s off to the next step – unless I stop to watch a few of my YouTube favorites or finish up an episode of the office.
Sometime after making lunch, I’ll head back to my room to get ready for a shower. This is new for me, as I used to be a strict “morning shower only” person. I’ve found that taking a shower before bed not only gives me more time in the morning to sleep, my hair somehow requires significantly morning less maintenance when washed at night. Before hopping in the shower I do a quick full-body scrub with my dry brush. I’d always thought dry brushing was just a fad, but even after the first night, my skin was SO smooth. I’ve been a believer ever since.
In the shower I do the usual, shampoo and condition, shave, and get squeaky clean, but I’ve also been multitasking by using both my Clarisonic and brushing my teeth in the shower to save time (though I store these outside the shower.) I’ve been using a more natural toothpaste before bed – Dr. Bronners – and it’s cruelty free! I’ve also begun the occasional oil pulling regimen, though I’m still not sure how I feel about it. 20 minutes of swishing is a long time!
After showering, I dry off and hit the body lotion, my favorite being the Soap and Glory body butter. Then I take off whatever makeup is left over (usually some mascara still clings under the eyes, a nod to my emo days maybe?) with a micellar water, and use a toner I’ve mixed myself with 2 parts rosewater and 1 part organic apple cider vinegar. This sounds a little weird and smells a tad funky but I find it really balances my skin and I’ve had less breakouts since I’ve started using it.
After toning, I use my nightly moisturizer, the Sleeping Facial by Korres – the stuff I swear by. Under the eyes I use Farmacy’s Eye Dew, which I cherish because it took me forever to find something that wasn’t too greasy or heavy or didn’t sting the eyes. Then I throw some detangling spray in my hair, run through it with my Lemon Drop brush, turn on my fan (who else needs white noise?) and then it’s off to dreamland until my alarm rudely interrupts me in the morning!
